Killeen
Killeen, located in the western portion of Bell County, is about 40 miles north of Austin on U.S. Highway 190. Until Camp Hood (sioned as Fort Hood in 1950 and officially renamed Fort Cavazos May 9 2013) was created as a military training base in the 1940's, Killeen was a small farm trade center. The population of 1,300 in 1949 reached 86,911 in 2000. Like it's neighbors, Killeen also has a temperate climate, and an average annual rainfall of thirty-six inches.
