As a pet owner, you need know what to expect as you look for a new home with your pets. Most landlords will:
- Limit the number and size. For example, a weight limit of 25 lbs is common because smaller pets are likely to be less destructive.
- Charge a non-refundable pet deposit. Some will also charge a small monthly pet rent.
- Require a lease clause for pets and/or a signed pet agreement.
- Have no tolerance to pets that "move in" without permission. This constitutes a violation of the rental terms and the landlord may demand that the pet leaves or the tenant moves.
If you have pets, or plan on getting one, it is always wise to look for rental properties that will accept them. Many landlords are aware that accepting pets can mean better tenants who stay longer.
